CVA's Board of Trustees
Ghazala has lived in Croydon for nearly 30 years. For the last seven years she has been a trustee for Croydon Voluntary Action as well as the Asian Resource Centre Croydon, Croydon BME Forum, Asian Women’s Organisation and Elmwood Community Centre. In her day job, she works for Croydon Council (healthcare and social services) and is a Court Interpreter. With previous experience in the Civil Service, she has spent 10 years in East Africa teaching. She has two adult sons

Picture to follow Brian retired from Croydon Council in 2009, where he had been responsible for the Croydon Strategic Partnership; he oversaw the Voluntary Sector Grants Programme and headed up Croydon Business during 2007-2009, as well as being a trustee and mentor for Young Enterprise Croydon. With a long standing interest and involvement with voluntary groups, he is able to pursue this and other interests to a greater extent, playing golf and tennis, watching live sport and is particularly looking forward to the 2012 Olympics.

Gordon has spent nearly all his working life in the public sector. He started out as a community worker and then worked in a variety of partnership based roles and currently works in Community Safety as a Senior Manager. As an active volunteer with a wide range of organisations, he has supported national community training, HIV / AIDS, been a school governor and a trustee of South London CVS Partnership. In my free time - not that there is much of it! - I improve my grumpy old man persona whilst cycling, running and occasionally walking in the Scottish highlands.

Terry was born in Manchester and spent most of his professional career as a Senior NHS Manager running hospitals. In the 1990s he became a Health Commissioner, being Director of Commissioning for Camden and Islington Health Authority, working closely with voluntary groups on community care arrangements. For the last 10 years, Terry has combined Management Consultancy with an active engagement with Croydon’s voluntary sector. A long term CVA trustee, he also is Chair of AgeUK Croydon (formerly Age Concern Croydon) and APCMH (Croydon Association for Pastoral Care in Mental Health). He likes travelling, classical music and sings for St John Upper Norwood’s Choir.

 Why is the Board important?
CVA’s Board agrees an annual Business Plan. Every five to seven years a new Strategic Plan is drawn up for the organisation, using extensive consultation and involvement at all levels in the organisation, with links to external stakeholders.

The Board oversees this process, with the Chief Executive Steve Phaure reporting to the Board regularly to ensure accountability.

The current Business Plan (2007-2012) lists the following goals:
  1. Negotiate Croydon’s voluntary sector interests through policy development and strategic partnerships
  2. Build and strengthen the capacity of Croydon’s voluntary and community sector
  3. Empower individuals, communities and voluntary and community organisations to be involved and to have a say
  4. Support and promote volunteering in Croydon
  5. Ensure that Croydon Voluntary Action has the resources it needs to achieve its strategic goals.
