NEWS: Croydon’s Health Champions celebrate success with Director of Public Health

Thirteen more Health Champions have successfully completed the 6 month community development programme to become local leaders. Each Health Champion starts the course with an idea about how to help solve a health problem in their community. Participants are supported to develop their ideas, their leadership skills and to deliver health solutions.

Director of Public Health, Peter Brambleby, joined the 5th course of Health Champions on the last day to celebrate their achievements and was very supportive of their work which included:

Geraldine O’Shea’s project: increase awareness among GPs and other health professionals about the importance of using accessible information when communicating with people with learning difficulties about diabetes, and raising awareness about diabetes among people with learning difficulties.
Francis O’Leary’s project: create a drop in for people needing support with drug and alcohol addictions.
Dorothy Johnson’s project: train young black and minority ethnic women to deliver healthy catering.
Dipak Valand’s project: a faith based diabetes and heart disease awareness project.

 who should join

If you live in the North West or East of Croydon, you can expect to live 5 to 6 years less than people living in the South of the borough, according to the Department of Health. Why? What factors contribute to this unfair divide? Why do some communities respond to public health messages whilst others don't? What do we need to do to provide a fairer system? How can we support people whose circumstances make it harder for them to choose healthier lifestyles?
Do so by joining this accredited Open College Network Community Development course lasting 11 days. All out of pocket expenses paid (child care and travel costs). CVA is particularly keen to hear from potential health champions who are 50 years + and connected to Thornton Heath.
